Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sclerodinium calyptroglyphe (Lebour) J.D.Dodge.

Type locality: Plymouth Sound; (Index Nominum Algarum)
