Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Moestrupia oblonga (J.Larsen & D.J.Patterson) Gert Hansen & Daugbjerg.
