Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Micrasterias mahabuleshwarensis var. ringens (Bailey) Willi Krieger.
Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), open-mouthed, gaping (Stearn 1973).
