The type species (holotype) of the genus Leptofauchea is Leptofauchea nitophylloides (J.Agardh) Kylin.

General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Thallus flattened, complanate, dichotomous to
irregularly branched, up to 5–6 (-9) cm high, 4
(-6) mm wide and 75–180 µm thick; stipe only
distinct in young specimens. Medulla 2–4 layered;
outer cortex 1–2 layered. Medullary cells with
spherical refractive bodies, 4–16 µm in diameter.
Cystocarps substipitate and globose, restricted to
the margins. Tetrasporangial nemathecia in
subterminal segments on both surfaces of the
blade.
Habitat
Deep infralittoral and in the circalittoral, mostly
between 25 and 75 m deep, on rocky bottoms or
coralline concretions, where it can be extremely
abundant. Occasionally the species is collected
from maërl.
