Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

Lyngbye, H.C. (1819). Tentamen hydrophytologiae danicae continens omnia hydrophyta cryptogama Daniae, Holsatiae, Faeroae, Islandiae, Groenlandiae hucusque cognita, systematice disposita, descripta et iconibus illustrata, adjectis simul speciebus norvegicis. pp. [i]-xxxii, [1]-248, 70 pls. Hafniae [Copenhagen]: typis Schultzianis, in commissis Librariae Gyldendaliae.

Type Information
Syntype localities: Cromer in Norfolk and Hastings in East Sussex, England; (Dillwyn 1809: 69) Syntypes: NMW?; (Ricker 1987: 70) Notes: Womersley (1987) gives the type as being in BM-K. Ricker (1987: 70) "TYPE: not located but possibly in NMW (see Dixon, 1966)."
