The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Micrasterias tropica var. australensis (A.M.Scott & Prescott) Kurt Förster.
