Type Information
Type locality: Mediterranean Sea; (Lipkin & Silva 2002: 32) Type: U.S.A.: "Torrey misit N. York": Torrey; LD; 44131 (Pena-Martin, Gómez-Garreta & Crespo 2007: 254) Notes: Pl. 2 in Griselini, Observ. Scolopendre. (1750) was selected as lectotype ("epitype") by Dixon & Irvine (1970), who illustrated the original plate as their fig. 2, which Pena-Martin, Gómez-Garreta & Crespo (2007: 254) considered corresponds to a species of Eupododon, perhaps E. planus, a species known from Venice, the most probable collecting locality of Griselini's material.
Pena-Martin et al. (2007: 254) consider that applying Fucus baillouviana to a species of Sporochnus or Eupogodon would create unnecessary nomenclatural change, not only at the species level, but also at the generic. They formally propose to conserve Fucus baillouviana with a new conserved type that will maintain usage. They favour the specimen at Lund, LD 44131 from C. Agardh's herbarium, which has, handwritten by him, "Torrey misit [sic] N. York"
