Gigartina tenera J.Agardh 1841
Publication Details
Gigartina tenera J.Agardh 1841: 18
Published in: Agardh, J.G. (1841). In historiam algarum symbolae. Linnaea 15: 1-50, 443-457.
Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Agardhiella subulata (C.Agardh) Kraft & M.J.Wynne.
Source of Synonymy
Gabrielson, P.W. (1985). Agardhiella versus Neoagardhiella (Solieriaceae, Rhodophyta): another look at the lectotypification of Gigartina tenera. Taxon 34: 275-280, 2 figs.
Type Information
Type locality: West Indies; (Womersley 1994: 343) Lectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD; 34480 (?); (LD 34483*) (Womersley 1994: 343) Notes: Syntype: Atlantic coast of southern North America; West Indies (Silva et al. 1996: 324). Gabrielson & Hommersand (1982: 41) note that when J. Agardh (1841) originally described G. tenera, he gave as its distribution the Atlantic Ocean along the southern coast of North America and the West Indies; when he transferred it to the genus Rhabdonia he listed specific localities, mentioning the islands of Haiti, St. Croix and Puerto Rico. They note that there are some problems associated with the lectotype, selected by Taylor (Taylor & Rhyne 1970) but accept it for the present. Later, Gabrielson (1985: 277), considers that the lectotype specimen LD 34480 should be superseded and he designates the specimen, LD 34483 (*) as the superseding lectotype since the latter exhibits the greatest conformity with J. Agardh's original description. Silva et al. (1996: 919) note that the specimen 33483 bears an inscription that is not completely legible and thus its provenance is uncertain.
