The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa mexicana f. pectinata (Kützing) W.R.Taylor.

Adjective (Latin), pectinate, with narrow close-set divisions like a comb (Stearn 1973).
