The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spirogyra is Spirogyra porticalis (O.F.Müller) Dumortier.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra fluviatilis var. ramosa (Svirenko) Petlovany.

Adjective (Latin), branched, bearing branches (usually many) (Stearn 1973).
