The type species (holotype) of the genus Zygnema is Zygnema cruciatum (Vaucher) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra rivularis (Hassall) Rabenhorst.

Type locality: "... most frequently attached either to stones or wood in the New Barge and Lea rivers" [England]; (Hassall 1842: 38)
