Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Takayama cladochroma (J.Larsen) M.F.Salas, Bolch & Hallegraeff.

Type locality: Hobsons Bay, Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia; (Larsen 1996: 344) Holotype: Fig. 37: (Larsen 1996: 343)
