The type species (holotype) of the genus Lobophora is Lobophora nigrescens J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lobophora ceylanica (Harvey ex E.S.Barton) C.W.Vieira, De Clerck & Payri.

Type locality: Ilots du Passage, Chesterfield Islands, New Caledonia; (Vieira et al. 2014: 1110: table 2) Holotype: C. Payri; July 20, 2008; growing on dead coral on outer slope at -50 m; (Vieira et al. 2014: 1109, 1110: table 2) Notes: Holotype: IRD7885.

Adjective (Latin), dense (Stearn 1983).
