Type locality: Port Phillip, Victoria; (Womersley 1994: 226) Lectotype: Wilson 28; 23 January 1888; LD, Herb. Agardh; 34730 (Womersley 1994: 226) Notes: Womersley (1994: 226) notes that there are isolectotypes in MEL (504444) and BM.
Port Phillip Heads and Western Port; BM, LD (Setchell, 1912: 245).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1983).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Habitat
A sublittoral species known from 5 to 33 m deep and commonly epiphytic on the seagrass Amphibolis, but also on the brown alga Caulocystis (Womersley 1994: 226).
