The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa chemnitzia var. vanbosseae (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Fernández-García & Riosmena-Rodríguez.
