Lectotype locality: Cádiz, Spain; (Silva & al. 1996: 282) Type: Clemente; BM-K; (Athanasiadis 1996: 60) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Searles (1968: 46, pl. 10a) who selected Cádiz as the type locality. Turner reported seeing specimens from Clemente (Cádiz) and the Mediterranean (Dr Mohr)

Distributional notes
Introduced into several localities in California (Sonoma, Marin and Mendicino Counties and San Francisco Bay; see Gabrielson, Widdowson & Lindstrom 2004: 118, footnote). - (18 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Rio & Cabioch (1988) report this species as an introduction to the north-west coast of France and Guiry (1997) reported plants from south-western Britian that require confirmation with fertile material. - (18 August 2006) - G.M. Guiry
