The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palatinus apiculatus (Ehrenberg) Craveiro, Calado, Daugbjerg & Moestrup .
