This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus yendoi (T.Segi) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Díaz-Tapia, P., McIvor, L., Freshwater, D.W., Verbruggen, H., Wynne, M.J. & Maggs, C.A. (2017). The genera Melanothamnus Bornet & Falkenberg and Vertebrata S.F. Gray constitute well-defined clades of the red algal tribe Polysiphonieae (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales). European Journal of Phycology 52(1): 1-20, 77 figs.

Type locality: Japan; (Yoshida 1998: 1073) Type: SAP; 025883 (Yoshida 1998: 1073) Notes: Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan; 30.iv.1935 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017). Japan [Hokkaido: Oshoro, Muroran, leg. Y. Nakamura, fide M.S. Kim & I.K. Lee (1999: 280), but Segi specifically excludes this specimen (pl. 6:2) as the type; pl. 6.1 is designated type, but without data] (INA).
