The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum yendoi Okamura & Yamada.

Type locality: Nomo, Nagasaki, Japan; (Noro, Ajisaka & Yoshida 1995: 9) Holotype: SAP; 026414 (Noro, Ajisaka & Yoshida 1995: 9) Notes: Type specimen (SAP 026414) is a female plant without basal parts (Noro et al. 1995: 4).
