Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypnea is Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Type Information
Type locality: "Nov. Holl."; (Silva & al. 1996: 295) Notes: According to Womersley (1994: 443) the type is apparently lost (not found in CN) and until it is found, Lamouroux's illustrations must serve to lectotypify the species. He notes that the type may have been collected by one of the early French expeditions, that of D'Entrecasteaux (1791-1794) or Baudin (1800-1804), and must have come from south-western or south-eastern coasts of Austalia. According to Silva et al. (1996: 296), it would be useful to select an epitype in accordance with Art. 9.7 in support of Womersley's interpretation of Lamouroux's illustrations.
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Yamagishi & Masuda (1997: 140, 141) note that among plants growing in Japan, no clear-cut differences between H. charoides and H. valentiae are found and they treat these as a H. charoides-valentiae complex.
Habitat
Found under moderate wave action and commonly epiphytic on Amphibolis (Womersley 1994: 443).
