The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa filiformis var. palmata Hering.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), lobed or divided in the manner of an outspread hand with the sinuses between the lobes pointing to the place of attachment (Stearn 1973).
