Adjective A (Latin), forked; having a small notch at apex (Stearn 1983).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Cylindrical, gelatinous but firm, clear pink to purplish-red fronds, 10 mm wide, 250 mm long, dichotomously branched from small discoid base. Constiction at irregular intervals in mature plants.
Habitat
On stones, shells and maërl in the subtidal (30 m) of western coasts north to Galway, mainly in clear, unpolluted water. Not common.
Key Characteristics
Firmly gelatinous with cylindircal thallus and occasional constrictions.
Similar Species
S. interrupta is smaller, darker in colour and mature plants are not constricted.
