The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum polyphyllum J.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), dense (Stearn 1983).
