The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spirogyra is Spirogyra porticalis (O.F.Müller) Dumortier.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra pellucida f. minor (Tiffany) V.Poljansky.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), pellucid, translucent but not hyaline (Stearn 1973).
