The type species (holotype) of the genus Staurosirella is Fragilaria lapponica Grunow.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sarcophagodes poulinii (Witkowski, Riaux-Gobin & Daniszewska-Kowalczyk) E.A.Morales.
