Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Borghiella silvatica (Er.Lindemann) Moestrup.

Spirodinium silvaticum Er.Lindemann

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), of the woods, sylvan; wild (not domesticated or farmed).
