Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diploneis hilarula (Pantocsek) F.W.Mills.

Type locality: "Köpecz (Cpeni), the Neogene fossil deposits in Romania"; (Jovanovska & al. 2014) Notes: "LECTOTYPE (designated here): Slide BP 2244, Pantocsek Collection, Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest (BP). The circled valve representing the lectotype is illustrated as Fig. 31. ISOLECTOTYPE (designated here): Slide MKNDC 006289/A, Macedonian National Diatom Collection." (Jovanovsk et al. 2014).
