Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Conferva is Conferva rupestris Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hydrodictyon reticulatum (Linnaeus) Bory.

Type locality: Habitat in Europae fluviis ad eorum littora [Europe] ; (Linnaeus 1753: 1165) Lectotype Voucher: OXF; (Spencer & al. 2009: 244) Notes: Cites Conferva reticulata Dillenius, a pre-Linnaean name; the illustration in Dillenius, Historia muscorum., t. 4, f. 14 (1742) is designated as lectotype by L.M. Irvine in Spencer, Irvine & Jarvis (2009: 244) of which there is a voucher in OXF "Conferva reticulata".

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), reticulate, netted, marked with a network (Stearn 1983).
