Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Porolithon antillarum (Foslie & M.Howe) Foslie & M.Howe.

Type locality: Culebra Island, Puerto Rico; (Woelkerling 1998: 302) Holotype: M.A. Howe No. 4373; 7.iii.1906; on reef near low water mark; NY; 945452 Notes: Isotypes: PC, Howe 4373, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym); BM, algal box collection 899; NY (Woelkerling, 1993: 28); TRH A27-1565: Howe no. 4373, including slides 1085, 1086 and two unnumbered slides. At low-water mark on a coral reef at Flamingo Bay, Culebra Island, Puerto Rico (INA).
