The type species (holotype) of the genus Cyclotella is Cyclotella tecta Håkansson & R.Ross.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pantocsekiella ocellata (Pantocsek) K.T.Kiss & Ács.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1983).
