Type locality: Wagap, New Caledonia; (Millar & Prud'homme van Reine 2005: 540) Holotype: Vieillard; 1863; L; 938,303-132 (barcode L 0055786) (Millar & Prud'homme van Reine 2005: 540) Notes: Holotype: Vieillard # 2109. Silva et al. (1996: 348) note that the type locality is not specified (New Caledonia). The type locality New Caledonia was first recorded by Grunow (1874: 34). South & Skelton (2003: 731) give the following data: type locality: not specified (Western Australia fide Reedman & Womersley 1976: 77).

Eponomy
Named for Eugène Vieillard (1819-1896), a French naval surgeon and naturalist who collected in New Caledonia and Tahiti and was director of the Jardin Botanique de Caen.
