Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria parvispora I.A.Abbott.

Isotypes: From the same collection as holotype, AST 82-684, spermatangial; AST 82-685, tetrasporangial.
