Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterothamnion is Pterothamnion plumula (J.Ellis) Nägeli.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Basionym
Ceramium crispum Ducluzeau

Type information
Type locality: "Ce petit Ceramium croît à Sette sur les rochers; je l'ai ramassé dan le mois de juin." [Sète, France] (Athanasiadis 1996: 69). Neotype: G IG110783 (Maggs & Hommersand 1993: 23). Notes: A specimen said to have been discovered by Athanasiadis (pers. comm. in Maggs & Hommersand, 1993) is said by the authors to have priority over the neotype from Banyuls-sur-mer, France, designated by Athanasiadis (1985, fig. 12.). However, Athanasiadis (1996: 69) retains the neotype.
