The type species (holotype) of the genus Tenarea is Tenarea tortuosa (Esper) Me.Lemoine.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lithophyllum cystoseirae (Hauck) Heydrich.

Type locality: "im Adriatischen Meere" [probably Trieste as there are Hauck specimens in TRH]; (Hauck 1883: 266) Holotype: on Cystoseira and Peyssonnelia.; L; 943.10-32 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 144)
