Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Karenia brevisulcata (F.H.Chang) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.
