The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladiella is Pterocladiella capillacea (S.G.Gmelin) Santelices & Hommersand.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella bartlettii (W.R.Taylor) Santelices.

Type locality: Itapeva, near Paranapoan beach, São Vicente, São Paulo State , Brazil; (Joly 1957: 102, 103) Holotype: Joly 187-1954; 12 September 1954; rocky coast; (Joly 1957: 102, 103) Notes: Joly (1957: 102, 103) notes that the holotype is located in Herbário ficológico do Departamento de Botânica da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil and that there are isotypes located at the main centres for phycological research. Isotype (UC no. 56467) studied by Santelices (2007). Type: SP; collector: Joly 187-1954, 12.ix.1954 (INA).
