Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseliodinium fusus (F.Schütt) F.Gómez.

Type locality: Atlantic (?) or Bay of Naples; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), shaped like a sickle.
