The type species (lectotype) of the genus Epithemia is Epithemia turgida (Ehrenberg) Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhopalodia gibba var. ventricosa (Kützing) H.Peragallo & M.Peragallo.
