The type species (lectotype) of the genus Synedra is Synedra balthica Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilaria fontinalis (W.Smith) Van de Vijver, D.M.Williams, C.E.Wetzel & Ector.
