Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ulva clathrata (Roth) C.Agardh.

Lectotype locality: Algeciras, Cádiz, Spain; (Silva & al. 1996: 737) Lectotype: MA; Algae 1713 (Cremades & Pérez-Cirera 1990: 490) Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting Cremades & Pérez-Cirera (1990b: 490) for further information regarding the lectotype of this species.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).
