Description
Marine alga with foliose, saxicolous or floating thalli; gametophytes dioecious, producing biflagellate anisogametes in the upper marginal region (up to 2 cm wide); female gametes 7.1 ± 0.3 x 3.5 ± 0.3 µm, male gametes 6.3 ± 0.4 x 2.3 ± 0.3 µm; sporophytes producing quadriflagellate meiospores (9.8 ± 0.5 x 5.5 ± 0.6 µm) also in the upper marginal region (up to 2 cm wide). Attached thallus 20-30 cm in height, light green, fragile, easily torn (often more or less split in the upper portion), orbicular, obovate or ovate, sometimes irregularly expanded, often with microscopic serrations, 30-55 µm thick in the upper and middle regions and 80-90 µm thick in the basal region. Cells in surface view irregularly arranged throughout the thallus, polygonal or quadrangular, 14-20 x 7-15 µm in the upper and middle regions, and circular, 14-30 x 12-20 µm in the basal region; cells in transverse section square or quadrangular with rounded corners throughout the thallus. Chloroplast covers the outer face of cell, with 1-3 pyrenoids. Floating thallus over 50 cm in height, lacking the basal part but similar to attached thalli in other respects.
