You can browse though the hierarchy by clicking on the names below and drilling down. At each level the numbers of current species are given for each taxon. Only currently accepted names are currently included. Fossils are also currently included but only marginally affect the numbers.
Enter the taxon name (e.g., Rhodymeniaceae) or the authority (e.g., Harvey). The first four letters (e.g. "Rhod" or "rhod" for Rhodymenia) will often suffice.

When you download a list of species from AlgaeBase, the data is supplied in CSV format with a ".txt" file extension, which will usually open in Notepad on Windows PCs and laptops.
Due to a persistent Microsoft bug, opening this file directly in Excel will cause problems with diacritical marks, e.g. "Kützing" becomes "Kützing".
