Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin (1745-1774), German naturalist and traveller in Russia was the nephew of Johann Georg Gmelin (1709-1755) Samuel's collections were incorporated in the Pallas herbarium. This herbarium was part of the Lambert herbarium, and when the latter was dispersed in 1842 the S. G. Gmelin collections were acquired for BM with the Pallas set.
