According to Professor Hiroshi Kawai, " 'Meii' means a book
collecting (carrying?) names of various items. 'mei' means 'name' and
'i' means 'similar things' or 'collection of similar things'. 'sou' (we pronounce 'mo' by itself) is algae, and 'rui' is 'kind
of' or 'similar things or group of similar things'. Therefore,
'sorui' is a general word for 'mo' (algae)."
