According to TL-2 "James Sowerby (1757-1822) was the publisher and the artist; all botanical text, however, is by J.E. Smith [except that for pl. 16-18 by George Shaw]. Smith's name appears on the title page only from vol. 4 onwards. Sowerby is referred to in the imprints as author (vols. 1-4), editor (vols. 5-6), or proprietor (vols. 7-36). The book appeared in 267 numbers; the plates are dated and these dates may be taken as the approximate dates of publication in accordance with the legal requirements of the period; the dates are, however, not absolute proof of effective publication (see e.g. Wiltshear, J. Bot. 53: 35. 1915). See also Henrey 1366. - The plates are coloured copper engravings by James Sowerby."
