Abstract:
Bipolar asymmetry has been considered a morphological characteristic sufficient for differentiation of genera among the Desmidiaceae. Therefore, Micrasterias sudanensis Grönblad, Prowse & Scott, the only species of Micrasterias showing such asymmetry, is made a type of the new genus, Prescottiella, gen. nov.
