Notes:
There are two pdfs for this paper: 4563 (50+ MB) comprises high-resolution scans of all pages, and 4563b (19.8 MB) comprises text images (but not plate images) that were “optimized” to reduce the file size. The text is less sharp in 4563b. All of the plates were individually scanned and had their brightness/contrast adjusted based on magnified comparison with the original images to ensure at a minimum that the scanned images show all the details present in the originals. As a result, the scanned images of the plates are slightly higher in contrast thus sharper than the originals (Pls. 35, 42, 45), better showing pores in multi-pored conceptacles (Pls. 27 and 28) and other surface details. The image of a section of Lithophyllum muricatum (Pl. 32b) appears to be inverted on the original: a conceptacle pore in median section points to the bottom of the page. Lucile Roush Mason’s mid-20th-century paper was a foundational milestone in the understanding of encrusting coralline algae on the North Pacific Ocean coast of North America. As the first monographic treatment of this group in this region (consolidating Foslie’s prolific, often confusing prior works, incorporating local knowledge, adopting modern study methods and carefully applying newly established nomenclatural protocols), her paper greatly facilitated advancements in knowledge of this group in the decades to come.
