Abstract:
Several green algae (e.g. two genera of the Prasiolales, Prasiococcus and Prasiolopsis) are described, who shaw some adaptions to aerial life. Heterotrichous habit, combined with phototropism of the erect system, permits aerial life for several filamentous Chaetophoraceae (Laespitella, Trentepohlia). But the dimensions are limited by the mono- siphonic structure. Development of "parenchymatous" clusters or tissue and heterocormous habit rend possible further differenciation and higher development (Fritschiella, Prasiolopsis). The conclusion is drawn, that the archegoniate plants may have arised from small green algae, with similar adaptions to aerial life as the mentionned genera.
