Epicladia Reinke, 1889
Holotype species: Epicladia flustrae Reinke
Original publication and holotype designation: Reinke, J. (1889). Vol. 1 pp. [i-iv], 1-34, pls 1-4, 5/6, 7-11, 12/13, 14-25. Berlin: Paul Parey.
Description: Uniseriate branched filaments, some species forming open branched tufts, others rather compact pseudoparenchymatous thalli. Hairs not present. Vegetative cells with parietal chloroplast with one or more pyrenoids. Asexual propagation by pyriform bi- or quadriflagellate zoospores. Sporangia formed from vegetative cells, reflecting size and shape of these apart from an exit papilla or short exit tube. Species presently referred to Epicladia live in brackish and marine environments. The type species associated with bryozoans, another species endophytic in old drifting leaves of Zostera marina, one is calcicolous, and remaining species epiphytic. Although seven species described, hairless species of Entocladia may be referred to Epicladia when critically studied.

organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
