Description: Thalli forming small rosettes composed of radiating, coherent filaments with apical growth and some distal cells bifurcate. Plant margins monostromatic with central part consisting of several cell layers. Vegetative cells with parietal chloroplast with one or a few pyrenoids. Hairs thin outgrowths from upper cells. Uppermost cells in central part of plants form sporangia, these similar to vegetative cells apart from short conical exit tube. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores. Germination stellate or unilateral into plants similar to parental plants. Ulvella species sublittoral epiphytes and epiliths in salt (seven species) and fresh (two species) waters. Taxonomic revision will probably result in transfer of some species into other genera. Hairs formed in culture when actively growing plants transferred into medium with low nutrient concentration.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
